ZENPUKUJI PARK

Escape Downtown Hustle and Bustle with Beautiful Ponds and Quiet Nature
[updated August 2022]

Zenpukuji Park is nestled among a quiet residential area, a bit of a trek north from JR Nishi-Ogikubo Station. It has two ponds, Kamino-ike (Upper Pond) and Shimono-ike (Lower Pond). At Kaminoike, you can rent a rowboat or a pedal boat. The pond has two small islands, in one of which Benzaiten, the God of wealth, music, eloquence and water, is deified. Many kinds of birds, such as spot-billed ducks or white egrets come to the pond. However, the greatest attraction of this park is the cherry blossoms along the pond in spring.

Zenpukuji Park is one of the best spots for cherry blossom viewing in Suginami. The best time to enjoy the blossoms would be usually from around the last week of March until the first week of April, but may vary depending on an early or late spring. You can walk to the park from Nishi-Ogikubo Station on the Chuo line in about 20 minutes, but if you don’t feel like walking, buses are available from both Ogikubo and Nishi-Ogikubo.

This park is also where the event Trolls in the Park is held for a few weeks in November, where at that time you can see interesting art pieces intertwined with nature.
