KAGAYAKI-TEI

Traditional Japanese Teishoku With Lots of Local Flavor

If you are looking for a great Japanese home-style meal during your stay in Tokyo, Kagayaki-tei is a perfect place for lunch in Nishi-Ogikubo. Kagayaki-tei, a short 6-minute walk from the North exit of Nishi-Ogikubo station, is only open during the lunch hours and serves up delicious traditional Japanese teishoku meals made with fresh, local ingredients. Japanese teishoku usually consists of a main dish of meat or fish, a small vegetable side, pickles, rice, and miso soup. In addition to some great stand-bys on the menu, like their sashimi teishoku or simple, but delicious curry rice, they also have daily specials which highlight the flavors of the seasons. Not just a restaurant, Kagayaki-tei is also a gathering place for many local residents. They provide a local place for seniors and groups for knitting or playing Go (Japanese checkers). You can enjoy a little peak into Japanese daily life over a beautifully prepared meal and a cup of tea. The friendly staff at Kagayaki-tei may not speak much English, but they will definitely make you feel right at home.

Kagayaki-tei is featured in Experience Suginami’s Nishi-Ogikubo Antique and Art Walk, a walking tour of some of our favorite stops on Nishi-Ogikubo’s north side. (Click HERE)
