PENGUIN HOUSE

Explore Tokyo’s Underground Local Music Scene
[updated May 2019]

If you want to experience the underground music scene of Tokyo, head to Koenji, known as a hot spot for unique and experimental music. Once there check out Penguin House, a few minutes walk from the north exit of Koenji Station at the top of the Junjo Shotengai shopping and nightlife area. Penguin House has been showcasing unique music for over 30 years, and with it’s wood-paneled walls and retro interior you can feel nostalgia in this basement venue. Live music goes from around 7:00pm – 11:00pm, and “pub time” goes past midnight, so drop by at anytime for local music and drinks. Shown in the images are Tokyo Session and Ai Fujiwara, just two of the superb local acts that often perform at Penguin House. Try to catch them or other local acts when you visit Koenji!

Good news is that Penguin House now offers only a 500 yen charge (plus drink charge of 500 or 600 yen) for foreign tourists! Usually when you go to see live music in Japan you will end up paying around 3,000 yen just for a local show, so to be able to pay only 1,000 yen total to enjoy some original Tokyo live music in a historical Koenji venue is quite the deal!
