PENGUIN CAFE (Update: 9/30)
Delicious Siphon-brewed Coffee and Great Music in Asagaya
[updated September 2025]
As the beautifully carved sign out front says, Penguin Café is the place for siphon coffee, herbal tea, and handmade sweets. But what do coffee and penguins have in common? One might think not that much—but about 10 minutes’ walk from north exit of Asagaya Station in Tokyo, these two come together to offer a wonderful coffee experience catering to all of your senses. Run by a former radio director/sushi chef, Penguin Café is a simple yet stylish location where siphon-brewed coffee is the star of the show. The delicious coffee is accompanied by equally tasty sweets including those of the Japanese variety such as dorayaki (red bean pancakes) and yokan (red bean jam) as well as Western sweets like pudding and cheesecakes. These are all to be enjoyed while the music of Penguin Café Orchestra, an avant-pop band led by English guitarist Simon Jeffes, fills the space to create a relaxed atmosphere. Tea lovers are also welcomed as Penguin also offers a good variety of loose-leaf organic teas. The free wi-fi is the cherry on top.
Opened in 2015, Penguin Café has now a decade of experience serving Tokyo its specially siphon-brewed and unique penguin-themed and calming atmosphere. Children and baby buggies are welcome in the shop, so families are also invited to come in and have a relaxing time with sweets and drinks. In addition to the counter seating there are also plenty of tables. So if you happen to be staying in Asagaya or in the neighborhood, be sure to take a break at Penguin Café and enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes, and the moment.
