GYOZA-DOKORO TACHIBANA (New! 2/25)

Tachibana: The Zero Yen Gyoza?!
[published February 2025]

Beneath the train tracks on Koenji Street, a minute walk from Koenji Station, Gyoza-dokoro Tachibana is a beloved izakaya restaurant that exudes a nostalgic Showa-era charm. This small yet vibrant spot is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. With only seven tables and a cozy counter, the 24-seat venue fills up quickly, making reservations for tables essential. However, the counter often has open spots, inviting walk-in customers to enjoy the unique atmosphere as well.

One of the biggest draws of Tachibana is its famous “0-yen gyoza.” With every drink order (soft drinks from 350 yen, alcohol from 420 yen), customers receive a plate of five delicious gyoza dumplings as otsumami (a small snack to accompany drinks). Many diners opt for a full set of ten gyoza for just 350 yen extra, an irresistible deal that keeps locals coming back. The gyoza at Tachibana are generously packed with vegetables and seasoned with a bold flavor that perfectly complements the drink menu, one that highlights beer and lemon sours as the house favorites.

While the food and drinks are enticing, it’s the cozy, yet lively atmosphere that truly sets Tachibana apart. The venue has been operating in the same location for 18 years, with much of the same staff, creating a sense of warmth and familiarity that regulars appreciate.

For those looking to fully indulge, Tachibana offers an all-you-can-drink (nomihodai) and all-you-can-eat (tabihodai) deal for just 4000 yen per person for two hours. This makes it an excellent choice for groups or couples seeking a fulfilling dining experience. Aside from the delicious gyoza dumplings paired with alcohol, also many other side dishes are available, including various dishes of fresh veggies (both cooked or raw salad types). To add to the flavor of the gyoza, the standard dipping sauce of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil are available, but many customers recommend a simple mix of vinegar with ground black pepper, enhancing the dumplings’ robust flavor.

Tachibana does not offer take-out, and smoking is only permitted outside, maintaining a cozy indoor dining experience. On a typical night, a single person can expect to spend around 2000 yen, making it an affordable and attractive date spot for young couples. Please make a note that you’ll need to have yen on you, as payment is cash only.

With its unbeatable combination of delicious gyoza, affordable drinks, and nostalgic ambiance, Tachibana remains a cherished part of Koenji’s nightlife scene. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, stopping by for a drink and some complimentary dumplings is an experience worth savoring.
