SUGINAMI CHILDREN’S TRAFFIC PARK (New! 5/27)
Learn and Play: A Great Outdoor Spot for Families
[published May 2025]
Upon stepping into the Suginami Children’s Traffic Park, you will discover roadways just like the public roads with traffic lights, traffic signs and pedestrian crossings. Here in the Suginami Children’s Traffic Park, children can gain traffic knowledge and etiquette while having fun navigating around the 1,100m route on a bicycle or a pedal-powered go-kart.
The steam engine-shaped play equipment and the railway crossings near the red-brick “Mini Tokyo Station” are very popular among the little train enthusiasts. Through the station gate with the sign “Suginami Station”, you will see the original D51-254 steam locomotive on display that was transported from the former Japan National Railways Omiya depot in 1974.
Plenty of free rental play equipment available
To get here, take the Suginami North-South Bus “Sugimaru” Keyaki Route from JR Asagaya Station bound for Keio Inokashira Line Hamadayama Station for approximately 13 minutes and get off at the “Jido Kotsu Koen Iriguchi (Children’s Traffic Park entrance)” stop, then it’s a 3-minute walk from there. The bus leaves from the south exit of Asagaya Station approximately every 15 minutes. You can alsp walk there from Tokyo Metro Minami-Asagaya Station, which takes about 20 minutes. The park is situated on a corner of the Zenpukuji-Gawa Green Park. Bicycles and pedal go-karts (more than 180 in total) are available to rent free of charge. However, the bicycles are offered only to children up to junior high school age and their accompanying adults. There is an extensive range of bicycles with sizes ranging from 14 to 26 inches. For children learning to ride, bikes with training wheels are also available. Pedal go-karts come in two types: single-seater karts for elementary school children and dual-seater karts for infants with guardians. In addition, in the dedicated toddler-safe area, there are a wide range of foot kick ride-on toy cars. The playground in the park features play equipment such as a bowl-shaped slide and a large jungle gym and the place is always filled with children’s cheerful voices.
Full of enjoyment all day in nature
With its abundant greenery, the park provides a perfect setting for spending a day off sitting on a tree-shaded bench gazing at splashes of water from the fountain in the summer or red maple foliage in the autumn. As one of the park entrances adjacent to the “Mini Tokyo Station” leads to the Zenpukuji-Gawa Green Park Children’s Cycling Course, you can combine this with the park’s own bicycle path and cycle the total distance of 2,400 meters feeling the nature along the way. Nearby are the Musashino-en Fishing Pond as featured in “Cycling with Dig Tours” and Wadabori Park where you can enjoy BBQ (reservation required, call Tokyo Metropolitan Government Zenpukuji-Gawa Green Park Service Center (TEL:03-3313-4247) or check on their website) as well as seasonal delights such as cherry blossom lined paths and plum groves.
