WARAJI BAKERY
Baked Veggie Goodness
[published May 2023]
Waraji Bakery is about a 6-minute walk from the north exit of JR Asagaya Station (JC08/JB05). You can usually find about 25 kinds of bread on sale at the store, and vegetable soups are also available. Waraji’s bread is unique and popularly shared on social media, with its large variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, including Inca no Mezame (“Awakening of Inca“ Potatoes from Hokkaido), tomatoes, asparagus, zucchini, mushrooms, strawberries and more. Their most popular item is a vegan curry bread stewed with 15 vegetables. You can also find other types of bread packed with various vegetables or featuring a single vegetable prominently, such as the broccoli gratin bread. Many items contain cheese or other non-vegan ingredients, so vegan customers will want to confirm which items are vegan before purchase.
Shinya Suzuki, the owner of the bakery, also runs some Izakaya restaurants in Asagaya and Ogikubo. The vegetables he uses at the restaurants as well as at Waraji Bakery are fresh and using minimal pesticides. One of his restaurants, Sandal Kitchen, is conveniently located near Asagaya Station and Smile Hotel. It has a good reputation for its rather home-style cuisine, which you can enjoy at a reasonable price.
If you have the chance to stop by or stay in Asagaya during your next Tokyo trip, why not try the unique variety of baked goods at Waraji bakery or even Sandal Kitchen for a late-night snack?
