GEKKOSHA RECORDS

70 Years of Classical Music Recordings and More
[updated August 2022]

Gekkosha, or “Moonlight Company” Record Shop is run by the knowledgeable and friendly Takahashi-san, who inherited the business and record collection from his father. The family was one of the first to set up their business on the west side of Tokyo, settling in the Ogikubo Ginza Shotengai (Shopping Arcade) in Ogikubo approximately 70 years ago. During that time Gekkosha acquired an impressive collection of classical music and since then has also acquired a significant selection of other genres including rock, folk, and tango, among others. For the classical music-loving traveler, this is the perfect place to get something off the beaten track, find a rare musical gem, enjoy some tunes and perhaps a mellow conversation– If you are having doubts about which record to grab, Takahashi-san will kindly play the record on his vintage player and offer his advice on your selection in what he refers to as his “broken English”. Above all, Gekkosha will be a worthy visit, as you won’t find many other record stores that have been around this long abroad or even in Japan.
