TOKUDAI (Update: 7/1)

Shnaghai Cuisine Specials and Ogikubo Ramen
[updated July 2026]

Enjoy vegetables in season! Tokudai, a long-established restaurant in Ogikubo. Founded in 1974, Tokudai has been serving comforting, everyday meals to the local community for over 50 years.

The owner originally trained at a Shanghai-style Chinese restaurant, and that experience can still be seen in the menu today. While Tokudai is known for its vegetable-packed ramen, which it began serving more than 20 years ago, the restaurant offers a wide variety of Chinese dishes and set meals as well.

Unlike many vegetable ramen dishes, Tokudai’s version uses soy sauce in the classic Ogikubo ramen style. The rich broth pairs perfectly with the natural sweetness of the vegetables, and customers can even request the amount of fat to be adjusted to their preference. The ramen is a traditional chuka soba-style noodle soup, while the shrimp rice bowl has flavors reminiscent of a Chinese-style rice bowl topped with a glossy, beautifully finished sauce. Together, they make for a satisfying meal without being overly heavy.

One of the owner’s goals is to provide filling meals for under ¥1,000, which inspired the creation of these affordable set menus. It’s a thoughtful approach that has helped make Tokudai a favorite among residents for generations.

If you’re still hungry, be sure to try their popular fried rice as well.
