POUBELLE

The Art of Old Folk Craft
[updated August 2022]

Tucked in the back streets of north Nishi-Ogikubo, Suginami’s go-to area for antiques stores, Poubelle is a gem of a shop filled with “art and old folk crafts” waiting to be discovered. Established by a young designer from Yamanashi Prefecture, Poubelle’s offering is a mix of beautiful antiques from the Edo Era, forgotten and restored pieces reminiscent of a time gone by, and also alluring rustic items hand-crafted in house. The store’s name which in English meaning “rubbish” is a play on words by the owner who sees the beauty even in abandoned and discarded goods.  Walking through the store as you sip down the green tea offered on occasion, one cannot help but feel as if stepping back in time.
