TANAKAYA
Authentic Soba Restaurant in Nishi-Ogikubo, Tokyo (Since 1938)
[updated May 2026]
Tanakaya is a historic soba (buckwheat noodles) restaurant founded in 1938 at its present location in Nishi-Ogikubo, Tokyo. The interior offers a nostalgic atmosphere for locals and a rare glimpse into the early Showa era for international visitors looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience.
One of their signature dishes is the ‘Shrimp and squid tempura soba’ (1,730 yen), featuring a colorful medley of shrimp, squid, mushrooms, and seasonal vegetables.
The dish features traditional Nihachi-soba—handcrafted noodles made with a perfect ratio of 80% buckwheat and 20% flour. The natural nutty aroma of the buckwheat combines with the crispy tempura to create a soft harmony and delightful taste. Another popular local favorite is the soba with ground meat and vegetables (980 yen).
