ART + STELLAS

Lifelong Craftsmanship
[published September 2020]

Walking down the southern shopping district around 5 minutes from Ogikubo Station, you can find a white gallery. Opened in 2008, Art + Stellas is a shop that has dealt in beautiful and high-quality daily-use goods. The owner has succeeded the business from her family in Sendai prefecture and has continued crafting their vessels, baskets and ceramics, for 23 years.

The special item here is a handmade basket made by an artisan who crafts them with tremendous efforts, resulting in impressively beautiful weaves. Another basket the shop recommends is an original design, made of grape skins! This is an order made item that takes one year to make (with a matching price tag, 97,200 yen) but can last around 100 years if treated well.

Art + Stellas also sells many other items such as clothing, kitchenware, beads, accessories, and glass items. There is a large number of interior products that can make your space feel more mellow. Once a month, the shop holds an exhibition to introduce artists and beautifully crafted goods. If you’re looking for some original art or useful housewares made with high quality Japanese craftsmanship, Art + Stellas is worth a visit. They also have a webstore, so you can peruse their wares online as well.
