HARUKIYA
Famous Ramen in Ramen-Famous Ogikubo
[updated October 2021]
Branching off from the originators of “Tokyo-style” ramen (that is, soy-sauce based broth supplemented by chicken or fish), Harukiya is one of the best in the business, and arguably the best when it comes down to Tokyo style ramen, born right here in Ogikubo. Harukiya first opened its doors in 1949, and a simple set-up allows you to focus on where the magic happens– right in front of you where you can watch Tokyo’s best ramen being crafted right before your eyes.
The noodles are prepared fresh every morning, with special attention paid to the day’s weather and humidity. The true Ogikubo flavor comes from the masterfully-prepared soy-sauce flavored “kaeshi” and the “niboshi” dried sardine broth. Although their specialty is this Ogikubo-original concoction, they also have variations including won-ton ramen, chashu pork ramen, Chinese miso soba, and tsukemen dipping noodles. Additional available toppings include seasoned egg, salty-simmered bamboo shoots (“menma”), and green onions (“negi”). There are 18 seats and children are welcome. Only 2 minutes on foot from Ogikubo Station, which is only 10 minutes from Shinjuku Station on the JR Chuo Line.
