HACHINOKI
Traditional Japanese Sweets Help You Savor The Season
[updated August 2022]
Whenever in Asagaya, check Hachinoki’s sweets at the Pearl Center shopping street, one minute walk from the station exit. The jellied chestnut and red bean bar (kuri mushi youkan) is the BEST in town. Made with the first chestnuts of the season, its silky texture and mild sweetness attracts many reservations, so be sure to go shopping as early as possible. It’s made only in autumn, but in other seasons try the monaka (bean jam filled wafers) since it has the same taste since the shop’s foundation in 1952!
Japanese confectionary, like haiku and many other Japanese cultural traditions, often take big influence from the seasons. In the case of sweets, however, long-standing shops like Hachinoki know exactly how to use the best ingredients at their freshest to supply you with the tastiest and most traditional Japanese sweets experience.
