HAYATOCHIRI

Original Remade Clothing of the Kitakore Building
[updated May 2020]

The Kitakore building in Koenji is famous because it’s just a cool building in its own right, but more for being a ramshackle warren of original clothing design shops, an art space, and dive bars. Famous people have shopped here while visiting Tokyo like Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams, and Jeremy Scott. Hayatochiri is the store in front of the Kitakore building (look for the eyes on the awning) and is filled with “remodeled” clothing. The owner, Goto-san, has been quoted as saying he wants the store to be “the most interesting place in the world!” The clothing and accessories in the store are designed by Goto-san and some of the most artistic and cutting edge designers. The designs are often colorful and experimental statement pieces, nothing trendy and all one-of-a-kind. The building owner allows the shop owners to remodel at will, providing a freedom and originality not found elsewhere in Tokyo. Koenji is an integral part of the designs. Unlike Harajuku, the designs reflect the freedom, independent spirit and uniqueness that is Koenji. The interaction and collaboration that happens here between shop owners and visitors is woven into the fashion. If you enjoy fashion on any level, Hayatochiri is a must-see when visiting Tokyo.
