Joya no Kane–Japanese New Year Bell-Ringing– and More in South Koenji

Founded in 1615, Myohoji Temple is situated in the southern part of Koenji, a 10-15 minute walk from the closest Tokyo Metro Stations. Its beautiful iron gate is a Japanese-Western blend design and is designated as an important cultural asset of Japan. In rainy season, usually in June and early July, around the temple’s pond, lots of Japanese iris and hydrangea bloom so beautifully that many people visit this temple to view them in the traditional atmosphere.

Also, this is a temple where you can participate in “Joya no Kane” (Japanese New Year Bell-Ringing), and strike the temple’s huge copper bell on New Year’s Eve for free. The bell, cast in 1725, can be rung from midnight, but it’s better to be there a little earlier because there is always a long line of people. However, it will be worth the wait for a unique Japanese New Year’s experience! It will be cold, but the festival atmosphere is always a good way to warm with hot food stalls and warm amazake, a traditional sweet fermented rice drink.

In spring during cherry blossom season you can also enjoy the elegant atmosphere among the beautiful sakura flowers.
