AMAIKKO

Retro Japanese-Style Sweets
[updated September 2022]

Amaikko cafe, with its nostalgic atmosphere, is famous for its kakigori— a classic Japanese summer dessert of shaved ice flavored with syrup. The current owner, who was a big fan of the cafe for 20 years, heard about closing of business and quit his company and became a sweets connoisseur himself to keep this cafe going. In particular, he boasts of his special strawberry and apricot syrup flavors, passed on from the previous owner. He makes them from scratch– real fruit taste strawberry syrup is made with high quality strawberries. Apricot syrup made with simmered and pure-dried apricots from California, making it thick and velvety.

“Anmitsu” is a Japanese dessert (Fruit, Agar, and Sweet Red Beans) that comes highly recommended and, unlike the shaved ice, is available throughout the year (kakigori shaved ice is available from the end of April until the beginning of October). Amaikko in Nishi-Ogikubo prides itself on the exquisite sweetness of its anko (red bean paste) made with big azuki beans from Obihiro, Hokkaido.
