KYOKAI DORI
The Ogikubo “Church Street” Is a Unique Shopping Area
[updated October 2020]
Located a short walk north from JR Ogikubo Station and the Town Seven shopping mall, Kyokai Dori (“Church Street”) awaits inconspicuously for the locals who make this their regular stop on the way home and the travelers who appreciate finding travel gems off the beaten path. In this shotengai shopping area the old mixes with the new effortlessly. Walk from end to end and you’ll bump into traditional ramen shops, rice cracker shops, and a wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop all tucked among a honey atelier, a hip gallery, a manga café, and a French patisserie among other must-visit locations. Kyokai Dori street is also host to a street bazaar and to part of the Ogikubo Music Festival running in November. This is one those places in Tokyo where you want to walk slowly and peak through the windows because you’ll be sure to find a good souvenir.
